Understand what qualifies and build a well-supported claim

Your team knows the work behind a difficult development project. Identifying which activities qualify for R&D tax relief takes a different kind of analysis.

BIKO 365 helps businesses assess their projects, explain the technical work and bring together the evidence needed to support an R&D tax credit claim. We work with your technical and finance teams to connect the development activity with the relevant claim requirements.

R&D Tax Credit Claims in the UK and Ireland

Start with the science and technology

A new product or improved process does not automatically qualify for R&D tax relief. The assessment needs to consider the scientific or technological advance sought, the uncertainties involved and the work undertaken to address them.

We explore these questions with the people closest to your projects. That means examining the technical starting point, understanding what established approaches could achieve and identifying where investigation or experimentation was needed.

The result is a clearer basis for deciding what belongs in your claim and what should be excluded.

Support from project assessment to claim preparation

Our R&D claim support can include:

  • Reviewing development projects and identifying potentially qualifying activities.

  • Interviewing technical staff and organising supporting evidence.

  • Preparing project descriptions that explain the R&D undertaken.

  • Working with your finance team or accountant to connect relevant expenditure with the qualifying work.

  • Identifying missing information and checking consistency across the claim documents.

  • Helping your team understand the preparation and notification steps relevant to its claim.

UK R&D tax relief

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2024, UK claims generally fall under the merged R&D expenditure credit scheme or, for eligible loss-making R&D-intensive SMEs, Enhanced R&D Intensive Support. Earlier periods may fall under the previous SME or RDEC rules.

We help you establish which framework needs to be considered and prepare the supporting material alongside your accountant. Eligibility, qualifying costs and procedural requirements must be assessed for the relevant accounting period.

R&D tax credits in Ireland

Irish R&D tax credit claims follow Revenue’s requirements. Qualifying activities must meet the relevant scientific or technological tests, including systematic investigation or experimentation aimed at advancement and the resolution of uncertainty.

We help organise the project evidence and technical explanation needed to support that assessment, working with your finance advisers on the associated expenditure.

Frequently asked questions

Does our development work qualify as R&D?

It depends on the work undertaken and the applicable rules. We assess the technical challenges and evidence before recommending whether an activity should be included.

Can you work with our existing accountant?

Yes. We can focus on the technical assessment and supporting documentation while coordinating with the adviser responsible for your tax calculations and return.

Can you review a claim we have already prepared?

Yes. Our independent review service provides a separate assessment of the technical explanation, supporting evidence and areas that need further attention.
